I would have never thought to ask, “By chance, did you spend your wedding night sleeping in a bathtub?”
But it’s funny how photos have a life of their own, and when you look at an image the memories come flooding back – visuals, sounds, smells, the energy of the day. Even after many years.
My wife’s favourite photo from her parents’ wedding (above) is a classic example of this. It tells the story of a couple who’d only met seven months earlier in the beautiful historic city of Krakow, Poland. On the morning of their wedding day it was -20 degrees. My father-in-law picked up his bride from her house and they drove across town to have their professional photos taken in a studio.
The guests stayed so long at the reception held at the family home, that my mother-in-law spent her first night as a married woman sleeping alone in the bathtub because the rooms were filled with party-goers!
Today, 41 years later and some 16,000km from that ol’ bathtub (which, by the way, is still standing!) this photo triggers those memories. What’s more, it keeps the memory alive so one day we can pass this story on to our daughter. I love it – and THAT is the power of an image.
What photo from your wedding floods you with memories? We’d love to hear about it – really, Email us the image and the story!
